The first phase of Kim’s tulip works spans from 2020 to 2025. The tulip’s strategies of attraction and reproduction through color and form parallel the ways in which art adapts to its time and environment in order to endure. In the second chapter of her tulip narrative, which continues in her recent works, Kim expands the notion of mutation beyond personal interpretation into a broader social metaphor. Scenes in which tulips—having chosen mutation as a means of survival—coexist within a single frame in differing colors and forms resemble the contemporary social landscape shaped by multicultural, multiracial, and multilayered identities. These scenes draw attention to the diverse ways in which different beings live and survive, metaphorically reflecting our own existence within a hybrid condition of coexistence. They further lead to questions surrounding norms and deviations, centers and margins, and visible and invisible boundaries, proposing that difference can be understood not as deficiency but as a new possibility rooted in diversity.

Kim’s practice centers on painting and extends into digital images, video, and installation. Technologies such as AI are employed as tools rather than sources of authorship. Through processes of selection, editing, and recomposition, she constructs her own visual language and narrative, inviting viewers to experience sensations of coexistence and connection within a shared landscape. Ultimately, Mutated Tulips becomes a condensed portrait of a contemporary hybrid society formed through the gathering of diverse textures and existences.
